📬Kendrick Lamar's Louis Vuitton suit grabs the Super Bowl
This year at the super bowl hip hop took over. Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J blige, Eminem and surprise act 50 Cent all took centre stage to perform their classics including California Love, Family Affair as well as love yourself plus In Da Club.
With Kendrick also supporting, he performed his past hits such Alright and M.A.A.D city. But what shone for him was outfit he sported.
The super bowl isn’t normally a place to show off your outfit, but often celebrities still take the opportunity.
Kendrick rocked a double breasted, oversized suit from the Louis Vuitton spring/summer 22 collection.
Designed by the late Virgil Abloh, it’s one of his last pieces.
Upon it’s release Virgil named the collection and its film Amen Break—a perfect metaphoric illustration of how an original drum break recorded by the Winstons.
“I called the collection that because I think it’s so profound: this idea that something can be iterated on by so many artists in so many songs to the point where it melts away. They weren’t compensated for it, by the way. And people don’t know that the drum pattern in their favorite song was from a very specific soul song—and it’s a sampler that makes it possible.”
The Winstons is a funk and soul group, released in 1969 their chart topping single “Amen Brother” is one of the most sampled loops of all time. Famed for it’s use in early hip hop, flipped by the likes of Salt N Pepa and Geto Boys, today it is hauled as the birth of drum and bass.
We’re digressing now; but what a return for Kendrick. In a open letter signed off by his alias Oklama, he said he’ll be back soon enough. Inevitably everyone is hoping for a new album but for now, this performance will do.
